These two are most certainly dated: The Golden Bough (which was recommended to me, but I have yet to read) was published in 1922. Likewise, Joseph Campbell began publishing works on World Mythology in the early 40s (if not late 30s--hence you will find the generic 'he' is used quite often when the gender of the subject is unknown.)
However, these two seem to be fairly good guideposts. For those who didn't know (or maybe even didn't care), George Lucas cited his delving into Campbell's The Power of Myth as inspiration for the original Star Wars trilogy. (Bill Moyers, back in 1988, did a six hour long interview with Campbell with the same title as Campbell's book. Recommended viewing for beginners -- like me!)
